    “Welcome” to Notes on “Spring”

I needed songs for my “Operation 365 2.” My 2016 daily video project (3 videos daily for a year, including an original song, with no repeats) required more original songs than I had. I didn’t want to have to write one every day, so I needed more.

I was walking my dog, Nigel, in Ocean Beach, and I came up with a way anyone could write a song… in an app. I also saw it as an idea to make it so anyone could write a song, a gift I remain eager to share.

But you see, I don’t know anyone who makes apps, so I went home and tried the concept myself. A few hours later, I had 12 songs, later named “Welcome,” and a personal revelation that I was, at least in my mind, “ready” to be a Dad.

“Welcome” was written using an experimental bulk songwriting theory on February 22, 2016. Twelve different keys, “randomly” chosen chord progressions, stream of consciousness lyrics.

Several songs in, I noticed a trend of songs that began with “B.” I wondered why “Bread,” “Beach,” “Bears,” The Birds and the Bees,” and “Boxing,” were suddenly bouncing out of me.

When Track 9, “Build with the Beat,” ended with the lyrics, “the birthing of spawn,” I was taken aback and gathered what I was writing about. I patted myself on the back with Track 10, “Bravo.” That is my son’s favorite now. He calls it “The Bravo Hooray Song.” Track 11 is one of my favorite songs I ever wrote called “Bright.” I recorded the vocals for that one with Jeff Berkley up at Jason Mraz’s house. I never sang that well while tracking vocals in my life. Do you think it’s contagious?

Track 12, “Baby,” is the first song I wrote for my son, Everett. That was 2016. He just turned 2 and is a huge fan of the record. That’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me with my music. If people enjoy it half as much as he does, it’ll go gold. Do people still go gold? Is it the Olympics again already?

This sub-conscious-tapping songwriting technique was a creative explosion and l needed many more songs for “Operation 365 2.” The first Operation 365 had withered my song reserves. On March 3, 2016, and March 28, 2016, I did it again. And again. This time, for twenty-four tunes each, two in each key, same songwriting approach.

I couldn’t write them all in two hours. Twenty-four is twice as many as twelve and I usually started around 11 at night. I busted out the first twelve like with “Welcome,” and finished the next twelve over the next few days. I now had plenty of tunes. I needed to record them all just to keep them straight. Now, those recordings have blossomed into “Spring.”

Those three records and two more (“Thank You,” and “Fly, in Spades,”) are “Spring,” a 5-record acoustic set, 86 tunes in all. My first seven records were full-band electric records. “Spring” offers many different sides of what I do musically. I hope to have all five out as soon as possible. Got to clear the way. “Winter” is coming.
